Hey friends,
There is a kind of night in the country when the porch light is a liar.
You switch it off and find out the real lamp is overhead.
That is where my new song started.
In the pasture.
Cold grass.
A sky that did not need me to be impressive.

You Painted First is out now.
It is a quiet reminder that every creator:
writer
painter
poet
songwriter
quilter
cook
carpenter
photographer
preacher
grandma telling the same story one more time
... is working on a canvas God already stretched.
We do not invent the light.
We trace it.
We reflect it.
We lift a little color so the work still points to Him.
You Painted First
If you only have four minutes, take them outside if you can.
Even a back step will do.
Let the song be the porch light you turn off.
Look up and revel in the OG Creator.
A line to carry
I lift a little color just to honor what You’ve done.
I get small under Your sky and remember Whose I am.
Whose you are does not change with the size of the platform.
It does not change if the work is words, pigment, voice, wood, or supper.
He painted first.
You get to reflect.
The lie creators can fall for
The culture trains us to ask the wrong first question:
Will they see it?
Will it perform?
Is it original enough?
Am I late?
Those questions are the wrong perspective.
They turn the gift of creativity into a scoreboard.
Scripture starts somewhere else.
“In the beginning, God created…” Genesis 1:1
Not “in the beginning, God branded.”
Not “in the beginning, God checked the analytics.”
He spoke, and there was light.
Then, on the final day of creation, He made people in His image.
This means the desire to create is not a personality quirk.
It is family resemblance.
A poem, a loaf, a melody, a well-set table, a repaired gate: all of it can be obedience if the signature stays small in the corner.
You are not stealing the sky.
You are reflecting it.
Colossians 3:23-24
Whatever you do, do your work heartily, as for the Lord rather than for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the reward of the inheritance. It is the Lord Christ whom you serve.
Every medium counts
If it leaves your hands and tells the truth, it belongs in this family:
the paragraph you almost didn’t send
the hymn hummed at the sink
the sketch that will never hang in a gallery
the song that only three people may hear
the photo of ordinary light on an ordinary porch
the child taught to look up and say thank You
the job well done
God is not more honored by a “real” art medium than by an ‘artificial’ one.
He is honored when the creator remembers who painted first.
That is the challenge tucked inside the comfort:
Make something this week that does not need an audience to be faithful.
Sign it small. Point it up.

Before you go
Name the medium God actually put in your hands this season…not the one you envy.
Make one small true thing in it this week.
Offer it without explaining it to death.
If you do that, you understand the song.
