The Story: Fish On… and the Fire Ants Bite
We bought this farm 8 years ago and seeded our pond with bluegill and catfish 5 years ago — all tiny fingerlings at the time.
We fished for fun, but for the longest time we caught nothing but bluegill.
Then came the drought a couple years ago. The pond shrank to almost nothing — just a small 10-foot puddle.
We figured we’d have to reseed everything once the rains returned.
But God had other plans.
After the rains came back and the pond filled halfway, we took the grandkids fishing anyway.
Lots of bluegill fun.
And this year?
Big, beautiful catfish started showing up. Somehow, in that tiny puddle during the worst drought, God kept a remnant of fish alive — and they reseeded the pond themselves.
On this particular sunny afternoon, hubby and I were out with our rods.

The wind was blowing across the tank, the water rippling like it was dancing.
Our dog was running circles chasing bluegill in the mud. Then hubby yelled, “Fish On!”
I slid down the bank to help net it… and my hand went straight into a fire ant bed….IYKYK! Ouch!
Water snakes were swimming shore to shore, one even tried to steal my bobber.
We were laughing through the stings and the chaos.

We pulled up a big ol’ thing.
For a moment we felt bad as it had swallowed the hook and that it was female with a sack full of eggs.
But then we remembered: we have the knowledge and ability to steward this well.
We put it on a trot line while we fished some more.
Our dog tried to “play” with it, so we extended the line to keep her alive until we could properly handle her.
That evening we fried her up in cornmeal — crispy, golden, and straight from pond to pan.
Best farm-fresh supper we’ve had in a while.
One small fish (plus the memory) fed our family with joy.

A lesson from God about stewardship - receiving an unexpected gift from the pond and handling it with care and gratitude in the moment.
If you remember, there was a different kind of stewardship God gave us a few months back.

The Lesson: Give Thanks in the Chaos
It’s easy to thank God when everything goes smoothly.
It’s harder — but so much sweeter — when provision comes wrapped in fire ants, snakes, and muddy banks.
We felt that mix of guilt and gratitude when we saw she was full of eggs.
Yet we chose to steward the situation with thanksgiving.
God had sustained those fish through drought in a tiny puddle.
He brought abundance again.
And He gave us laughter in the middle of the discomfort.
Scripture that anchored us: “Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” — 1 Thessalonians 5:18
Paul wrote this to believers facing real hardship, not perfect circumstances. He didn’t say “give thanks *for* every hard thing,” but *in* every circumstance.
Even when it stings. Even when it’s chaotic. Even when dinner comes with a side of fire ants.
God is in control of nature:
The drought
The remnant fish
The balance of life in our little pond.
He’s in control of our messy moments too.
Our job is to steward what’s in front of us with open hands and grateful hearts… and laugh when we can.

Apply It This Week
Name one area of “chaotic provision” in your life right now — something that came with discomfort or mess, but is still clearly from God.
Take a moment to thank Him in that circumstance.
Write it down, pray it out loud, or share it with someone.
Watch how gratitude shifts your eyes from the fire ants to the feast.
Enjoy the song I made about the adventure!
What kind of provision has God brought you lately?
Many blessings (and maybe a few more fish stories),
